Please put all Out of the Past discussion here, unless you'd like to talk about one aspect of the show specifically. If that's the case, feel free to start a separate topic.

I liked the episode, but I hope we start to see more of Joseph. Its probably crazy but I kept hoping that Mick would call Joseph for backup to deal with that creep. lol I want to see Joseph in action. I was a bit surprised that Beth found out Mick's secret already though. I kind of expected a bigger buildup to that reveal than eppy two. Overall it was a good eppy. I hope the ratings are decent.

Clearly an improvement over the first one. (Of course DG had a hand in writing it, so who knows what the ones that come after he left will be like).
I loved that JD was in it for more than 2 minutes (yeah, I know, one-track mind). And I was probably watching way too obsessively for every little neuance, but what I noticed is that, in key moments, he is remarcably subdued. In a good way. There's a quite intensity there, but it's in the tention of his shoulders, in mild inflection of his voice, in slight tilt of his head. He let's loose in funny scenes, but when it's serious, he goes for the under- rather than over. And somehow it's more menacing. These are the moments when it comes thruogh for me that this is someone who's lived a long while and who's gotten economical with his emotions and his expressions. He doesn't need to drive a threat home, merely imply it, for it to carry the meaning. He knows Mick doesn't doubt his seriousness or his capability to deliver on it. I may be reading way too much into it, but hey, I'm fascinated. Re: vampire reveal so soon. I kind of like it that she knows now. It always annoys me in fantasy shows how long people around don't realize what's going on. She is a reporter, she is supposed to be observant, and if she went for months not finding out (even if she had tried), I'd be beyond stupid. As it is, she kept saying "There's something Mick's not telling me" and I kept going "You think?!" I'm more interested to see the dillema and the struggle now that she knows. I like that she has a boyfriend, and that he seems like a good guy who's good with her. These triangles -- and there must be a triangle, it's the rule, lol -- are infinitely better to explore. The kinds where both options hold appeal and the choice is neither easy nor obvious. |

So, so, sooooooo much better than last week. yay! None of the acting bothered me at all, even Sophia's, though I have to wonder where the hell Shannyn Sossmon was. I kind of assumed she'd be in every episode.
Great Jason scenes in this one. I wonder if we get to see Josef feeding in every episode? He's like Logan that way -- such a ladies man! ;) But I really wish they done more with the '80s flashback, because JD + the '80s is all kinds of awesome. What's great about this ep is that I cared about the non-Jason stuff, like I might actually watch this show if he weren't on it. I thought the writing was pretty good (and the guest cast was great). But then, this was a Greenwalt ep, so you expect it to be good, and I worry what the upcoming post-Greenwalt eps will be like. Quote: And yet this worked on Lois & Clark for years. ;) |

I agree; much, much better episode this time around. A'OL was really good tonight and I still like Sophia Myles. Jason was great and loved the black leather look. Also, as a former Duran Duran obsessive, hearing "Hungry Like the Wolf" (and yes that was the right year) play over my current obsessions (Jason Dohring) was awesome.
I'm brain-dead and exhausted right now, so not much more to add, but that I pretty much agree with all you've said. I'll try and get the Josef scenes up by 10 or so tomorrow morning, but I'm dragging right now. One thing I noticed is that there was quite a pause after SS's name in the credits before Jason's and I don't get it; nor do I get why she has higher billing. She really doesn't have much name recognition value for most people at all whereas Jason just spent three years on a critically (deserved or not at the end) adored show. Eh, he'll get his soon enough, I have to believe. |

Quote: Oh, man, so true. "Hungry Like the Wolf!" I hope we can see Josef feeding in every ep. Didn't JD mentioned something about getting "to eat a girl" all the time? Quote: Agreed. I really liked the killer guy. He was mean and menacing, but in a human sort of way. The guy with a bad attitude to begin with, fortified by 25 years of obsession and prison arrogance. And I liked the old cop. I, for some reason, was excited by the dynamic: that he thinks Mick has aged 25 years just like everyone else and he is talking to him about being senior sitizens. At first, before I realized the guy was blind, I actually thought here was someone who knew Mick was a vampire. So the blindness reveal was a nice touch. Quote: Giggle. Yeah, I was actually thinking of them when I said that. I get that those are comics and that the disbelief gets suspended indefinitely, but it kind of bothered me. |

I'm currently watching the episode...and the picture is freezing every 5 seconds. OMG is it annoying! Did anyone else have that problem??
Oh, just to add my niece just pointed out that when Mick and Beth were in the convertible, their hair did not blow or move! We were cracking up |

I will never be able to hear Hungry like the Wolf and not think of Jason. It was perfect song choice.
The show was better this week, but they need more Jason "wibbly wobbly timey whimey"

This episode was way better than the first. Although there were three Jason scenes it seemed like less overall time. I agree with all above about hoping Jason feeds in every episode. He makes it look like kissing--so very sexy! Also, I'm loving his clothes: the suit, the leather, and even the silk robe! He is growing his role and seemed very much the top dog who's used to being in control.
I liked AOL better this time. He seemed more natural. SM looked very pretty at the party. |

This episode gets an enthusiastic 4.75 stars from me!
I wish the pilot had been as good as this second episode. I have, really, only two complaints. One, Beth was much better in this episode but I still can't warm up to her. Two, I wish Josef had more scenes because he was great! David Greenwalt writing, and Chip Johanssen directing. I know Greenwalt is no longer with the show but I hope they can get him to write a few more episodes. And Chip to direct. Mick was great. Believable as tough guy, yearning toward a woman he can't have, in his flashbacks, even his vulnerability when he's outplayed by a psychopath who's had 25 years to study vampires. After Mick was accused of shooting the guy, I just knew he was going to go to Josef. Who else but his best friend? And I still think the chemistry between those two rocks. On the purely physical reaction plane: Watching Josef in the flashback? Umm, more, please? Damn, he makes biting a girl's neck the most sensuous and sexy act I can imagine. As much as I'm enjoying Mick, I just wanted him to move, dammit, when he took the call and Josef went back to his "meal" so I could see that. I could much more easily have followed the phone conversation while watching Josef make love to that girl's neck. As it is, I'll have to watch again to have any idea what Mick said on that phone. I'm shallow. Yes. Your point? The ending was well-played and intense. Romantic, too. What could be more romantic than the "monster" trying so hard to avoid being seen by the woman he yearns for? Mick's face with the blood running down his chin, the fangs, and the flashy eyes as he says, "I'm a vampire" in a voice that knows, just knows, will be his complete downfall? Got me in the gut much more than last week's ending. |
