I have no doubt he would have rocked the part. Especially the one he was trying for. I don't know much about the guy they ended up casting, and maybe he is spectacular. But it's hard for me to judge.

As to the whole thing, I hope he walked away with a positive rather than negative feeling. For starters, this was a cattle call. They literally let people in by groups, giving them like minutes to impress, standing in a line or something like that. There were thousands of people auditioning. All in the same rough age group, with varying degrees of experience and credits. The fact that JD got called back means a hell of a lot! :)

I agree with Jennifer as far as the "name-making" thing goes. It's certainly a cache to have Spielberg on your resume. On the other hand, it hardly did much for most of the people on the "Band of Brothers." So who knows?
